When buying a Ram pickup truck, you know you're getting a truck you can depend on for towing. However, when choosing between Ram trucks, it can be difficult to pick the one with the sizing and power that's right for you. So, how do you determine this? The first and potentially most important thing you should think about when buying a truck is how much towing power you need.

Determine your needs

Know whether you plan on towing for large jobs or fun weekend getaways. Also, learn the weights of both your towing items and your payload, so you can best decide if you need a light-duty or heavy-duty truck. Many don't know this, but the payload and towing weights have an effect on each other. If you plan on towing a heavy trailer load, lower your payload weight and vice versa.

Know your truck's limits

The amount that your truck can tow is greatly affected by box length, transmission, wheel drive system, axel ratio and cab size, which is why it's important to keep these features in mind when choosing a truck.

You also need to know the difference between measuring the amount a truck can handle and how much a trailer weighs. The maximum weight that's allowed for a vehicle, which includes passenger weight, cargo weight and curb weight, is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The maximum allowable cargo and the trailer's total weight is the Gross Trailer Weight Rating. Finally, the maximum allowable weight of the loaded trailer and towing vehicle is the Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the weight your truck can safely handle.

Recognize truck differences

The 2019 Ram 1500 is great for more casual towing. As a light-duty truck, it still has an impressive maximum towing capacity of up to 12,750 pounds when properly equipped.1 Plus, since it's smaller than its heavy-duty siblings, the Ram 1500 is easier to handle and maneuver, offering a better every day driving experience.

There are two heavy-duty trucks in Ram's lineup - the Ram 2500 and the Ram 3500. The Ram 2500 can dole out up to 19,780 pounds of max towing capacity when properly equipped.2 For the toughest jobs, the Ram 3500 model has a maximum towing capacity of up to 35,100 pounds when properly equipped.3
