The arrival of winter means that there's a chance you might find yourself driving on an icy or snow-covered road, making for difficult and sometimes dangerous driving situations. As such, it's important to keep these tips in mind when driving on a slick road this winter.
Slow down
If you drive quickly on an icy road, it can be challenging to stop in time for a red light. You need to give yourself as much time as possible to slow down and keep in control on the road, so it's a good idea to drive at a slower speed than you normally would.
Skip the drive
Before hitting the road, be sure to check your local weather forecasts so you know what you'll be up against. If it's not necessary for you to make the drive, consider staying at home if the roads are in poor condition.
Don't stop to help
If you see a vehicle stuck on the side of the road, you may be tempted to help out the driver. However, helping someone on an icy road can actually cause more problems since drivers may brake as they pass your parked car and end up sliding on the ice. If you do see someone in need of help, be sure to instead call the authorities.
Don't brake too hard
Braking on icy roads can often lead drivers to lose control on the road. If you do have to brake, be sure to be gentle and avoid hard braking when possible.
Drive around hills
Hills can be difficult to drive on when the road is slick since they may require extra braking or acceleration. If you are able to drive a route that avoids hills altogether, be sure to do so. If hills are inevitable, make sure you have enough speed to make it up the incline.
